All fish migrating to Area 51 to spawn must swim through a highly obstructive culvert under SR 299. This culvert has been in place for many decades. As many as 90% of the fish attempting to swim through were unable to and were left stranded at the mercy of poachers. After years of delay, fish passage improvements were finally made to the culvert in Fall 2006. The results are dramatic with many times more fish migrating to Area 51 to spawn.
